Preparing for Baby: Essential Checklist for Expecting Parents

Preparing for Baby: Essential Checklist for Expecting Parents

Preparing for your baby's arrival can feel overwhelming. This comprehensive checklist ensures you have everything you need for those first weeks and months with your newborn.

Nursery Essentials

Crib with firm mattress and fitted sheets, changing table or pad, dresser for baby clothes, comfortable rocking chair or glider, blackout curtains, and a nightlight. Don't forget a baby monitor for peace of mind.

Feeding Supplies

If breastfeeding: nursing bras, breast pump, nursing pads, and nipple cream. For formula feeding: bottles, formula, and bottle warmer. Burp cloths and bibs are essential regardless of feeding method.

Diapering Must-Haves

Stock up on diapers (newborn and size 1), wipes, diaper cream, changing pad, and a diaper bag. Consider cloth diapers if that's your preference, but have disposables as backup.

Clothing Essentials

Newborn and 0-3 month onesies, sleepers, socks, hats, and mittens. Have a few outfits in 3-6 months ready too, as babies grow quickly. Don't overbuy newborn sizes.

Bathing and Grooming

Baby bathtub, gentle baby soap and shampoo, soft towels and washcloths, baby nail clippers, soft-bristle brush, and a digital thermometer for checking bath water temperature.

Health and Safety

Infant car seat (install before baby arrives), first aid kit, baby thermometer, nasal aspirator, and any medications recommended by your pediatrician. Schedule your baby's first pediatrician appointment.

Final Preparations

Pack your hospital bag, install the car seat, set up the nursery, stock up on essentials, prepare freezer meals, and arrange help for the first few weeks. Most importantly, rest and take care of yourself!
