Baby Safety Essentials: Complete Home Safety Checklist

Creating a safe environment for your baby is a top priority. This comprehensive checklist covers essential safety measures to protect your little one from common household hazards.

Nursery Safety

Ensure the crib meets current safety standards with slats no more than 2 3/8 inches apart. Use a firm mattress with a fitted sheet. Keep the crib free of pillows, blankets, and toys. Install window guards and secure furniture to walls.

Kitchen Safety

Install cabinet locks on lower cabinets, especially those containing cleaning supplies. Use stove knob covers and keep hot items out of reach. Secure the refrigerator and ensure the dishwasher is locked when not in use.

Bathroom Safety

Set water heater to 120°F to prevent scalding. Use non-slip mats in the tub. Keep medications and cleaning products locked away. Never leave a baby unattended in water, even for a moment.

General Home Safety

Cover electrical outlets, secure cords, and install safety gates at stairs. Anchor heavy furniture and TVs to walls. Keep small objects, coins, and batteries out of reach. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Car Safety

Use an age-appropriate car seat installed correctly. The car seat should be rear-facing until at least 2 years old. Never leave a baby alone in a car, even for a minute.

Outdoor Safety

Supervise babies closely outdoors. Ensure play areas are free of hazards. Use age-appropriate playground equipment. Protect from sun exposure with appropriate clothing and shade.

Emergency Preparedness

Keep emergency numbers handy, learn infant CPR, and have a first aid kit. Know the signs of choking and how to respond. Create an emergency plan for your family.
