Watching your baby grow and develop is one of the most rewarding experiences of parenthood. This guide covers key developmental milestones during your baby's first year.
0-3 Months: The Newborn Stage
During these early months, babies develop head control, begin to focus on faces, and start making cooing sounds. They'll start to smile socially around 6-8 weeks and begin to lift their head during tummy time.
4-6 Months: Growing Awareness
Babies start rolling over, sitting with support, and reaching for objects. They begin babbling, laughing, and showing interest in toys. Many babies start solid foods around 6 months.
7-9 Months: Increased Mobility
Crawling typically begins during this period, along with sitting without support. Babies develop object permanence and may start to show stranger anxiety. They begin to understand simple words and gestures.
10-12 Months: Standing and First Steps
Many babies pull to stand and may take their first steps. They develop a pincer grasp, say their first words, and begin to follow simple instructions. Separation anxiety often peaks during this stage.
When to Be Concerned
While every baby develops at their own pace, consult your pediatrician if your baby isn't meeting major milestones or if you notice significant delays. Early intervention can make a big difference.
Supporting Your Baby's Development
Provide plenty of tummy time, read to your baby daily, talk and sing frequently, and offer age-appropriate toys. Most importantly, give lots of love and attention.
